Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) offer the advantage of using both an electric motor and a petrol engine. So you can use electric for short trips, and an efficient hybrid engine for longer ones.

The Benefits of Plug-in hybrid

lower emissions

GO FURTHER WITH LESS PETROL

With a superior all-electric driving range, PHEV use the electric motor for a larger portion of the journey than a regular Hybrid vehicle does, reducing reliance on petrol.

lower emissions

BACK-UP WHEN YOU NEED IT

When the electric battery is running low, the vehicle switches to its Hybrid drive mode. The petrol engine is then assisted by the electric motor to power the vehicle and maintain the battery's charge level.

REDUCED EMISSIONS

15 years of pioneering Hybrid research has resulted in Plug-in Hybrids which can emit zero tailpipe CO₂ emissions when driving at low speeds on EV drive mode.1

UNCOMPROMISING POWER AND SAFETY

Plug-in Hybrids deliver exceptional responsiveness. Equipped with Lexus Safety System+2, our electrified vehicles are designed to give you greater control and peace of mind.

How Plug-in hybrid works

Powertrain
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) offer the advantage of using both an electric motor and a petrol engine. The electric battery can be recharged through the vehicle's system or by plugging into an external electricity supply. This can be at home or at a public charging station via AC charging.

Driving modes
Lexus PHEV default mode is EV driving, harnessing purely all-electric power. The Lexus Hybrid technology then helps to recharge the battery as you drive. There is also a Battery Charging Mode, which uses the petrol engine to recharge the battery.

Benefits
For the Lexus PHEV driver, this spells fuel economy, superior driving range and reduced tailpipe carbon emissions.

Your PHEV Questions answered

How do I charge my Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle?

Lexus PHEV have Alternating Current (AC) charging capability so you can charge by attaching a cable to the vehicle and a 240V power source. This might be at home or at a public charging station. When the electric battery is running low, the vehicle switches to its Hybrid drive mode. The petrol engine is then assisted by the electric motors to power the vehicle and maintain the battery's charge level.

How long does it take to charge a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle?

Charging times vary depending on the type of plug, the vehicle type and the amount of charge left in the battery. On average, charging either a NX 450h+ or RX 450h+ on a completely empty battery will take 7.5 hours with a 10A charging current, and 2.5 hours with a 32A charging current (found in public charging outlets).3 Costs vary accordingly, depending on your electricity provider or choice of charging network.

How far can you travel on one charge?

The typical distance that a PHEV can travel with one charge varies depending on the conditions such as high speed travel on a highway or stop-start traffic. The NX 450h+ has an electric range of 87kmwhile the RX 450h+ has an electric range of 65km. Once the electric battery is depleted, the petrol engine assists the electric motors to power the vehicle and maintain the battery's charge level. You can keep driving until you need to fill up with fuel, or plug in to an AC charger for electric battery charge.
